They combine quintessential pub quiz elements with the nationwide love of pre-recorded audio that can be accessed anytime, anywhere. So, how do they work? They follow the time honoured quizzing tradition in Britain by asking a series of questions and brain-teasers for points, yet instead of being in-person, they are available online at the push of a button.
As pub doors are beginning to slowly open up again, quizzes are nigh on the horizon. Although, it may be some time before large groups can gather and battle-it-out raucously in a packed pub for the title of top trivia expert. In the meantime, open your mind to the world of the trivia podcast.
So, grab your tipple of choice, pens, paper and fire up the speakers. Why not invite your friends over for a simulated pub experience? You can take your time, push pause to grab another cheeky beverage and even have your own happy hour at home. We’ve put together a great list to help satisfy your weekly quiz cravings with these terrific trivia podcasts. Don’t be googling the answers now, as we like to say here at Quiz Coconut – use your coconut!
1. Brain of Britain
This is one of the founding fathers of trivia podcasts. Brain of Britain has been entertaining the British masses since 1953 (although, it was then under a different title as part of the series ‘What Do You Know?’ hosted by Franklin Engelmann). Now, it is hosted by Russell Davies, a prominent journalist and broadcaster. The quiz questions are composed by a trusty team of trivia experts and covers a wide range of general knowledge topic.
So, how does this classic game work? Simple! Four contestants compete on each programme, usually in ’12 heats’, battling it out until the grand final to win a silver salver and the title Brain of Britain.
Contestants must answer correctly within in 10 seconds for the chance to earn points and to be asked another question. If the contestant gives an incorrect answer, their turn ends and the question is offered to the other players. In the event the contestant answers five questions in a row correctly, a bonus point is awarded and control passes to the next contestant. The contestant with the most points at the end of the programme wins. Read more about the game format, here.
